Petersfield CC won by 10 wickets
Rich Stephens 5-16 and 93 n/o
Dave Squires 44 n/o
The last game of the season had arrived (where has that season gone) and the 2s travelled to Sarisbury Green to play on the green. Petersfield won the toss and put the opposition in on a green wicket.
Steve Gibson (0-15) and Heather Clarke (1-22) opened the bowling as the small square boundaries and a fast outfield led to a good start from the Sarisbury openers Ian Black (38) and Michael Garner (9). The partnership was broken as Rich Stephens (5-16) bowled Garner in his 2nd over with the score on 53. What followed in Stephens’s next 7 overs can only be described as a collapse. From 52-0 to 89-8, there was some resistance from number 4 Abbott (11) who hit his 3rd ball for 6 and 5 for 4 before he was bowled by Jack Butcher (1-28). At the other end Stephens was bowling a very tight line and could have had 2 or 3 more wickets as he created chance after chance.
Ed Copely (3-33) joined the party replacing Butcher and between them the spin twins reduced Sarisbury to 8 down for 89. While the collapse was happening at the other end J Pink (51 not out) was playing on a different pitch clearing the short boundary 6 times (a couple of leading edges) in the 6 sixes he hit. Jack Hilton (0-26) was the main victim of the hitting as his 2 overs went for 26. Ed Copely removed K Abbott (7) with score now on 125. . Heather Clarke removed D Andrews (0) to end the innings caught behind by keeper John Windebank. The last wicket put on 25 with Andrews not scoring a single run from his 16 deliveries faced (Jack Leach type of innings). Sarisbury made 150 off of their 31.3 overs.
Petersfield this season have struggled to chase down totals so skipper Gibson changed the opening partnership again and it proved to be an inspired decision as good friends Squires and Stephens set about chasing the total down. The 50 came up in the 7th over as both players hit boundaries at will, with Stephens clearing the rope 4 times one also off the top edge. None of the bowlers escaped as all 6 went at 7 an over. Stephens brought up his 50 in the 15th over with a lovely front foot cover drive, this also brought up the hundred partnership. The pair rotated the strike to frustrate the Sarisbury bowlers with only one chance given by Squires dropped on the fence at cover.
Stephens then went completely on the attack and he took the score from 111 in the 15th over to chase the total down in the 19th over as he hit Cooper through the covers for yet another 4. Rich Stephens (93 not out) and Dave Squires 44 (not out) missed out on personal milestones but saw their side home before drinks were taken having scored at over 8 an over. A comprehensive victory which showed that 2s could have challenged for the title if they had had an extra batsmen or 2 in the side all season!
Man of the Match - Rich Stephens for his 5 fer and a very good 93 not out
Magic moment - Bowler Pink complaining about the top edge 6 when he had hit 2 in a similar vein over square leg to the short boundary!
