Petersfield II vs. Froxfield II

The regional 2 rivalry between Petersfield and Froxfield took place at the Heath on Saturday. For the second week running Petersfield won the toss and opted to bat in good conditions whilst making their opponents struggle in the heat.

Openers Fergus Evans (42) and Chris Salmon (134) started steadily but benefited from a number of early extras from the Froxfield bowling. Once settled the opening pair rotated the strike well and put the loose balls to the boundary. Left-armer Higgins (1-31) had Evans caught behind in the 27th over after trying to turn the ball down the leg side. James Longland (11) came in and immediately looked settled and ready to further take the attack to Froxfield but was trapped leg before by Hiscock (1-26). This brought Paddy May (30 not out) to the crease who played a powerful innings and allowed Salmon to reach his century off 88 balls. The pair upped the run rate before Salmon was caught off at mid-off. May continued his big hitting to leave Froxfield needing to chase 259 off their 40 overs.

Froxfield got off to a flying start in their chase before Heather Clarke (1-37 off 7) dismissed opener Patabendi (26) in the 7th over. Griffiths (72) was hitting boundaries with ease and new partner Higgins (42) hit some big sixes which put Petersfield under pressure and made it seem that their total was under threat. After a spell of good bowling from James Longland (0-28 off 6), Dave Evans took two superb catches to remove both batsman one off Fergus Evans (1-48 off 8) and the other off opener Jack Hilton (1-26 off 6) upon his return to the attack. With 10 overs left Froxfield needed 80 runs but tight bowling from Paul Clarke (0-45) and with Dan May removing Charles for 23 meant that Froxfield came up 38 runs short. This win makes Petersfield’s record 5-1 this season and in the race for promotion.
